At Custom Books Online...... our goal is to motivate elementary children to read. As a parent and teacher myself, I've seen some children breeze through books with great enjoyment and self motivation. And I've seen others who enjoy being read to, but lack the skill set which frees them to truly enjoy reading on their own. Several years ago I stumbled onto a wonderful motivational tool. I had chosen a book to read aloud to my three children, then ages 10, 7, and 4. As it happened, the story I began to read to them also had three children as the main characters, the same ages and genders as my children. Just for fun, I decided to substitute the names of the characters in the book with the names of my children. I was fortunate that it worked so well. As it happened, not only did the ages and genders work for me, but the circumstances of the story also fit my family enough that it was believable. The children were extremely enthusiastic about listening each day. Thus was borne an idea -- Why not provide similar books which help motivate children to read on their own? -- books which include their names; books which take them on an imaginary journey to other places and times? Finally, why not add important historical events, places, and people so that our young readers can learn of them as well? The result was Custom Books Online, where your child and two others can go on such a journey. I've tried to make reading fun and learning enjoyable.
